Category A schools in Ghana and their location. |
There are seven Senior High Schools (SHS) categories in Ghana: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. Categories A, B, C, and D are public or government institutions. Public technical/ vocational institutions fall under Category E, while private Senior High Schools and technical/ vocational institutions fall under Categories F and G, respectively. Category A schools in Ghana boast excellent academic performances, sufficient learning facilities, and a higher student population.
Senior High School is the educational stage that falls between Junior High School (JHS) and college. Junior High is more generalized because students study the same subjects. On the other hand, the Senior High School curriculum consists of core and elective subjects (chosen by the students). Students at this level have extra assignments and projects in preparation for college.

Ten (10) Beaches in Accra you should visit. |
Accra is without a doubt the starting point of your trip to Ghana. For both locals and foreign visitors, it is most likely one of the most popular places in Ghana.
There are plenty of places to see in Ghana's capital, Accra, for
those who choose to see it. There is something for everyone, including upscale
restaurants, historical sites, and white sand beaches in Accra.
Ghana's shoreline runs around 560 kilometres (350 miles) from Aflao in the
Volta Region to Cape Three Points in the Western Region.
This coastline is home to several gorgeous beaches with a variety of sand and rock formations that hug the Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore, one of Ghana's best destinations for a beach holiday is Accra.
Are you looking for a place to unwind and enjoy the landscape on a beach in Accra? The best beaches in Accra have been compiled by HR Forum News and are ideal for any kind of holiday.
Beaches in Accra you should visit:
La Pleasure Beach
La Pleasure Beach, also known as Labadi Beach, is the most popular beach in Ghana. The western edge of Accra is home to some of Ghana's best hotels for those who would rather be close to the ocean. For those who are not staying at the hotel, there is an admission charge. Labadi Beach is widely renowned for holding large-scale festivals and entertainment events over the holidays. The beach is equipped with facilities and services that will make guests' stay enjoyable, such as restaurants, bars, locker rooms, and bathrooms. Open and secure for visitors is one of the busiest beaches in Accra, Ghana.
Bojo Beach
Bojo, Ghana's most well-known private beach, provides luxury and unique pleasure. You may enjoy first-rate resort amenities, such as hotel accommodations and unrivalled service, at the private beach. Bojo Beach is 12 miles from Accra and 13 miles from the international airport. Free private parking is offered to guests coming in their cars. The beach has been available for business since 2013.
Sakomono Beach
Sakomono Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Accra, Ghana. Sakumono beach is fun to visit since part of the beachfront is rocky. Music lovers just must visit this beach. Its shoreline is lengthy and gorgeously rocky. The beach next to it is Tema port.
Kokrobite Beach
Kokrobite Beach is the best beach in Ghana to visit if you like music; it's only 25 kilometres from Accra, but the beach feels very different from the busy city, making it an ideal place to hide out for private gatherings. At night, Kokrobite Beach comes alive with bonfire festivals with music, dancing, and drumming.
Luxury Beach
At the Luxury Beach Resort, escape the bustle of the city and enjoy peace, genuine comfort, and a restful experience. If you're looking for a super-hideaway beach that's uncrowded, Luxury Beach is your best chance when it comes to beaches in Accra. Families will love the surf, and the beach is well-kept.
Best Western Plus Accra Hotel Beach
The Best Western Plus Accra Beach Hotel offers a fantastic environment for relaxing and enjoying yourself. It incorporates Ghanaian traditions and cultural components. The sea view is amazing, and the hospitality is superb. It can be the best option if you wish to stay near to the beach. The hotel is also among Ghana's best affordable seaside hotels.
Dansoman Beach
Even though Dansoman isn't the greatest tourist destination in Accra, it's still worth going for the beach. I experienced what it was like to spend a day at Dansoman beach as a child. seeing children swimming and local fisherman at work. It's possible for the beach to become crowded around the holidays. Weekend trips to the beach are ideal.
Bola Beach Accra
Wonderful setting before the sun rises on a Saturday morning. Beyond Ghana's Independence Square is the Bola beach. The vast quantity of plastic waste that was discarded at Bola Beach gave rise to the beach's name. While efforts are underway to reduce the mountains of plastic waste, I believe that real change in people's attitudes is necessary before any progress can be made. And now beach trips are popular with both domestic and foreign visitors.
La Palm Royal Beach
La Palm Royal Beach, which has been open for more than 20 years and boasts a stunning coastline, is another of the well-liked beaches in Accra. The La Palm Royal Beach prioritises luxury and provides an opulent atmosphere, making it the perfect destination for those looking for quiet, uncluttered recreation in Ghana.
Teshie Beach
Feel the water under your feet, the wind caressing your hair, and the sand at Teshie Beach. Stay until sunset to round off a wonderful day spent outdoors. I have some amazing news to share. You may go to Teshie Beach in Accra for free. However, you are not required to end your sightseeing at this particular stretch of shoreline. At neighbouring attractions like Labadi Beach, The Junction Mall, and A&C Mall, your day will end happily.

Odwira festival of the people of Fanteakwa District. 31 Jan 2024, 5:22 am
Odwira festival of the people of Fanteakwa District. |
The leaders and people of Ghana's Eastern Region, namely the people of Fanteakwa District and Akuapem, celebrate the Odwira festival. The residents of Akropong-Akuapim, Aburi, Larteh, and Mamfe celebrate the Odwira Festival. Every year, in the months of September and October, this is observed. The Odwira festival commemorates a significant victory over the Ashantis in 1826. And at Dodowa, this was the Katamansu conflict. The year 1826, in October witnessed the first celebration of it.
This occurred between 1811 and 1835, during the rule of Nana Addo Dankwa (I), the 19th Okuapimhene of Akropong. People are regenerated and given protection during this period of spiritual cleansing. Additionally, the residents of Jamestown, Accra, commemorate it. This is because of the relationships that were created when the Ga and Akuapem people intermarried.
Traditionally, the Odwira festival is timed to coincide with the harvest season, when food is abundant and people express their appreciation to their ancestors. Thanksgiving for the bumper crop is mostly expressed via "giving food to the ancestors" since it is a yam feast.
History of the Odwira festival
The Odwira festival has been observed yearly by the Akropong, Amanokrom, and Aburi communities for about 200 years. It was first celebrated by Nana Addo Dankwa 1 (1811–1835), the 19th Okuapehene of Akuapem. The Odwira festival is also observed in other places within the 17 states of Akuapem. The occasion commemorates the Okuapeman people's triumph against the formidable Asante army in the historic battle of Katamansu, which took place in the vicinity of Dodowa in 1826.
The Odwira festival follows a long-standing routine of a tradition carefully planned from generation of old and occurs as follows:
Adaebutu
This is a time for introspection and silence. All burials and loud noises are prohibited in Akuapem for forty days before to the Odwira festival. Breaking the sequence results in penalties for offenders.
Odwira da Monday
The Akan people have the notion that a chief never passes away. A chief instead visits the community. The road leading to this settlement is made visible on Odwira Monday. The ceremonial route from the royal mausoleum, also known as Amanprobi, to the middle of Akropong, the capital of Okuapeman, is cleared during this holy private occasion. The Adumhene, the leader of the Abrafo (State Executors), is in charge of carrying out the age-old tradition. The route clearing represents the arrival of our ancestors, the Nananom, to the Okuapehene's Palace to participate in the Odwira festival.
Odwira da Tuesday
Odwira is said to be a supernatural gift from the royal ruling clan's ancestors. The Banmuhene, who is the Chief of the Royal Mausoleum and the Keeper of the Ancestors, is called upon on this day by the Gyaasehene, one of the five Divisional Chiefs of the Akuapem Traditional Area and Administrator of all royal courtiers.
When the Okuapehene, or Omanhene, is prepared to celebrate Odwira, the Gyaasehene formally notifies the Banmuhene. The Gyaasehene have given the Banmuhene the mission to go back to the Royal Mausoleum's location in the holy forest, meet with Nananom's ancestors, and transport Nananom's Odwira to the Okuapehene.
Additionally, on Odwira da Tuesday, members of the Akropong 7 Stool households were outside harvesting the fresh yam crop. This is carried out inside Kubri's home. It is illegal in all the states of Akuapem to consume the fresh yam before this day and hour. Additionally, it is prohibited throughout the town. Waiting for the Baamuhene and his people to offer the blessings of Odwira, the Okuapehene sits in state. Odwira can only be honoured when the Baamuhene and his people return with the ancestors' blessings.
It is said that only the Baamuhene and the Okuapehene see what the ancestors have delivered when the Baamuhene returns and approaches the Okuapehene. A ceremonial garment is then draped over their heads. After this, the ban on noise making is lifted.
Odwira da Wednesday
Everybody in Akropong is in a state of collective grief on this day. Families come to grieve the passing of loved ones, therefore the dress code is symbolic and includes crimson and black. In order to express sympathy, the Okuapehene pays visits to each of the seven stool houses in Akropong: Aboasa, Asona, Twafo, Benkum, Kyeame, and Akrahene.
All of the Ancestors (Nananom) and all of the residents of every Akropong home who have passed away throughout the previous year are remembered starting at daybreak. It is believed that the ancestors (Nananom), for whom the route has been ceremoniously cleared, have joined the Odwira spiritually.
Odwira da Thursday
Okuapeman essentially acknowledge the existence of a supreme God and express their gratitude to him, but they also declare their allegiance to the Omanhene, who sits on the Ofori Kuma seat. On this day, Okuapehene dresses in vibrant, exquisite robes, sits in state, and greets everyone who comes to pay their respects.
During this time, a young woman who is one of the omanhene's customary wives parades in public along the town's main thoroughfares on her way to give her husband a special meal of "Eto." Later on in the day, "Eto" is taken by a group of his people, led by the caretaker of the royal mausoleum, Banmuhene, to Nsurem, the first hallowed resting site of Okuapeman's first omanhene, in order to feed the ancestors. Chiefs from the other stool houses do the same.
Starting around 7 p.m., the Okuapehene and his five divisional chiefs, Gyaasehene, Benkumhene, Nifahene, Adontenhene, and Kurontihene, personally reaffirm and vow their devotion to the Ofori Kuma Stool at the residence of holy stools. This crucial event demonstrates the Akuapem Kingdom's unity.
A curfew is implemented at 10 p.m., concealed by symbolic darkness. Akropong quiets down as state executioners, known as Abrafo, carry Okuapeman's stool and regalia through the abandoned streets of Akropong to Ademi mu, a historic river, for the ceremonies of holy cleaning. When they return, they give the Okuapehene their regalia, the cleaned Stools, and themselves. It's thought that seeing them at this ceremony is prohibited for any citizen who isn't in the entourage. In this private ritual, the Okuapehene shoots three musket bullets to mark the end of the day and ceremonial. He also symbolically strips nude and is wrapped in a holy piece of cloth. It also means that Omanhene has been given the task of organising the great durbar that will take place the following day.
Odwira da Friday
The celebration's customs and rituals basically come to a head on this day. At Mpeniase, the first tree planted on the day Akropong became the capital of Okuapeman, the chiefs, elders, and people of Okuapeman gather. In order to publicly honour the Mpeniase, they continue to serve as a living emblem of the spirit of the Akuapem Traditional Area. The Okuapehene gives a review of the year and discusses initiatives and development efforts for the next year, to the attendance of the clergy, government officials, and others. The government and his people send greetings of goodwill to the Okuapehene from both abroad and at home.
To Okuapeman, the Omanhene delivers a speech that effectively serves as the kingdom's condition of affairs. It has been observed from past festivities that this is the day with the highest number of guests. The evening is jam-packed with events, including pageantry and performances. Businesses take use of this chance to promote their goods by supporting and organising certain side events.
Rich traditions, art, fashion, music, design, and cuisine all come together in Odwira. The cultural journey creates new opportunities and moulds expressions. We cherish our customs, guard them fiercely, and give them meaning that we understand on many levels. This is your opportunity to come see us if you have always been in awe of the Akuapem people and our distinctive language. We are delighted to greet you and share our customs with you and the rest of the globe.
Thanks for reading this article about the Odwira festival. I believe it has been educative. You can leave your comments, in the comment section below. XOXO.

Profile of the Saint Louis Senior High School (SHS). |
Saint Louis Senior High School (SHS) is a Ghanaian educational institution for girls in the Oduom suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Profile of the Saint Louis SHS
History
Most Rev. Hubert Pailissen, SMA, in early 1949, said; "In this country, scarcely 15 percent of the school-going youth are girls. The people now begin to realize that more must be done in favour of this much–neglected part of the human race, and the chiefs, conscious of their duty towards their subjects, asked us to establish schools for girls in their respective villages…. But to obtain results, it is necessary that the direction of girls' schools should be in the hands of 'Sisters of a Teaching Order' with the necessary experience in the latest development of pedagogic methods."
Thus, the first St. Louis Sisters entered the nation on October 18, 1947. The St. Bernadette School, now known as the "Roman Girls," was an established primary school that they were to continue managing. Being true to their nature, the St. Louis Sisters—who never take anything lightly—made the decision to build a new secondary school on the same property.
When Saint Louis SHS debuted in 1952, it had 12 females enrolled at first. Out of this group, just a few made it to the second group in 1953, totaling forty-two. When the remaining group took their "O" Level Exam in December 1957, they numbered eleven.
The majority of the Sisters' salary, donations from the diocesan, and cash collected were used to build the property and buy the supplies that were required.
The church desired that the Apostolate of Education take on the crucial responsibility of developing robust and knowledgeable Christians who are able to significantly impact social and political matters. Maybe education for women needs more attention than any other field.
The value of "girl child" education was recognised by the Catholic Church and St. Louis long before it became a catchphrase. For this reason, the Church and the St. Louis Sisters have always approached education from a comprehensive standpoint.
Notwithstanding challenges with personnel and funding, the number of students enrolled increased. It was obvious that further accommodations were required. The necessary location was granted, and funding came from the Diocese and the Sisters, thanks to the generosity of Nana Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, the Asantehene of blessed memory at the time.
Inspectors' subsequent reports attested to the Sisters' superior instruction. The school's "air of efficiency" and "very good organisation and discipline" were praised in these assessments. In 1960, the Ministry of Education expressed their desire for the Sisters to establish a Training College at the location of Saint Louis SHS, based on these praises. During that year, 1960, St. Louis Secondary School had a relocation to its current location. On March 25, 1960, the feast day of the Annunciation, the late Otumfuo Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, Asantehene, lay the foundation stone, which was consecrated by Rt. Rev. Andrew van den Bronk (SMA), the Bishop of Kumasi at the time.
The Sixth Form Arts class started off with five students in the same year. The Administration Block was constructed and dedicated to the "Annunciation" in 1964, fittingly (because we have good news to convey). The growing demands of the school led to the construction of other structures. The Sixth Form Science track was established in 1964. The butterfly collection with Sister Elizabeth (Mary Roch) and Sr. Philomena McGuinness (Mary Iosagan), the enjoyable singing and music instruction that left such a rich legacy, and the thought-provoking drama production will all be remembered by former pupils. Together with Sr. Aideen, there was also general landscaping, shrub planting, and shade tree planting. The school now contains a library complex among many other structures.
Community Outreach
To attend to the shortage of missionary priests and nuns, the students formed a strong lay apostolate to go to the outlying compounds to teach Catechism, prepare candidates for Baptism, and visit lapsed Christians to re-awaken their faith. Students also got an opportunity to broaden their outlook by visiting neighbouring countries.
In the early 1970s the Saint Louis SHS began admitting boys into Sixth Form. This continued until the early 1980s when the program ended due to the problem of control.
Alliance
Saint Louis SHS maintains an ongoing alliance with the Opoku Ware Senior High School, popularly called AkataSlopsa.

The Hogbetsotso festival of the people of Anlo. 7 Jan 2024, 2:34 pm
The Hogbetsotso festival of the people of Anlo. |
The Hogbetsotso festival is a significant celebration observed by the chiefs and people of Anlo in the Volta Region of Ghana. There are several prominent Anlo towns, such as Anloga (the capital), Keta, Kedzi, Vodza, Whuti, Srogboe, Tegbi, Dzita, Abor, Anlo Afiadenyigba, Anyako, Konu, Alakple, Atsito, Atiavi, Deʋegodo, Atorkor, Tsiame, and numerous other villages.
The festival is held every year on the first Saturday in November in Anloga, the traditional capital of the Anlo state. The festival's name originates from the Ewe language and signifies the celebration of migration, specifically "coming from Hogbe (Notsie)". The festival has been celebrated for approximately forty years.
History
The Anlo tribe is a community of individuals residing along the eastern coast of Ghana. Before establishing their current residence, they resided in Notsie, a town located in present-day Togo.
There is a prevailing belief that they migrated from southern Sudan, passing through Oyo in Nigeria, Ketou in Benin, and Adja Tado in Togo, before finally settling in Notsie. According to oral tradition, they resided under the rule of a tyrannical king named Togbe Agorkoli (Agor Akorli). To successfully evade his oppressive regime, they devised a plan to create an opening in the sturdy earthen barrier encircling their community.
They accomplished this by directing the women to dispose of all their wastewater at a designated location on the wall. Over time, the area weakened, enabling the townspeople to break through the wall and make their escape through the resulting mud. According to tradition, in order to outsmart their pursuers and gain more time to escape, they cleverly walked backwards with their faces towards the town. This created the illusion that their footprints were leading into the town.
The festival
The Hogbetsotso festival is traditionally observed on the first Saturday in November, showcasing a range of ceremonies. These ceremonies involve a period of peace-making where all conflicts are resolved through friendly solutions. There is a prevailing belief that the reason behind this customary period of peacemaking stems from the people's belief in their ancestors' ability to live in harmony with themselves during their escape from Notsie.
It is believed that this characteristic played a crucial role in the success of their journey. Additionally, a purification ceremony is performed on the ceremonial stools, which the Ewe believe to be the dwelling place of ancestral spirits.
This is done by pouring libations. This is followed by a thorough cleaning process where all the villages are meticulously swept and any rubbish is safely disposed of through controlled burning. This cleansing ritual commences at the Volta River and concludes after several days at the Mono River in the Republic of Togo.
The highlight of the Hogbetsotso festival is a gathering of the chiefs and people of Anlo. The chiefs wear vibrant traditional attire and are respected by their subjects during ceremonies held at the durbar grounds. The Hogbetsotso festival is known for its vibrant celebration of dancing, singing, and merry-making.
The Agbadza dance
The Agbadza, a dance that originated as a war dance imitating the graceful flight of birds, was once called atrikpui. It is the traditional dance of the Anlo people and is performed with great energy during the grand durbar of the Hogbetsotso festival. It is a way of showing reverence to their ancestors and deities.
Agbadza is a versatile form of performance that can be enjoyed in a variety of settings, including parties, funerals, and naming ceremonies. In this modern era, individuals from all backgrounds can partake in the Agbadza dance without any limitations. Another dance that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Ewe people is the borborbor dance.

Beads around Waist; A beginner's guide! |
What are beads around waist?
Beads around waist are a traditional African accessory that consist of small glass beads on a string or wire worn around the waist or hips. They come in different colors and shapes and may also include decorative stones, crystals, or charms.
Beads around waist have been worn for centuries by women in many West African cultures. In more recent years they’ve gained popularity among women in the West. They’re also referred to as belly beads, waistline beads, or beaded waist chains.
In Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and other West African countries, beads around waist are a symbol of femininity, fertility, sensuality, and spiritual well-being. Today, in both Africa and the United States, women use beads around waist for aesthetic and practical purposes.
We’ll cover the many reasons why beads around waist remain such a popular accessory for women around the globe and how you can find the beads for your body.
Why do people wear beads around their waist?
Weight awareness
Beads around waist are commonly used to gauge changes in weight. Rather than step on a scale, people can use beads around waist to stay aware of any weight gain or loss in the abdomen.
Beads around waist don’t stretch. If you were to gain weight, the beads will sit higher on the waist or feel tight. Conversely, if you were to lose weight, the beads will feel loose and fall further down to the hips.
Unlike the numbers on a scale, beads around waist are more compatible with body positivity. Women of all sizes and shapes can comfortably wear beads around waist to adorn their body.
There are even adjustable beads around waist available if you don’t want the beads to fit differently based on your weight or changes like bloating.
Maturity
In parts of the world where beads around waist are a cultural tradition, the beads are often associated with womanhood, maturity, and growth.
In Ghana, babies are traditionally adorned with beads around waist during their naming ceremonies. Only girls, however, continue to wear the beads as they grow older.
In many West African traditions, mothers tie a pair of beads around waist onto daughters during their first menstruation to symbolize their passage into womanhood.
Outgrowing a pair of beads around waist may also mark the transition into a new stage of life. The beads a girl wears during puberty will differ from the beads she wears after her first child, for example.
Intimacy and fertility
Many women around the world use beads around their waist in intimate settings to enhance their sensuality. Waist beads may also be closely associated with fertility. Some women wear specific beads during sex when they’re trying to conceive.
Among the Ashanti and Krobo cultures in Ghana, larger beads or bells are added to a woman’s waist beads once she’s fertile so she makes noise when she walks to alert potential suitors nearby.
In other cultures, waist beads are worn under clothing for only the wearer and her chosen partners to see, similarly to a special set of lingerie.
Special beads for the waist are also available for pregnant women. They’re thought to provide protection for the mother and growing baby.
Heritage and pride
While women of all races and ethnicities wear beads around their waist, this accessory has unmistakably African origins. Waist beads are a popular way for Black women in the diaspora to connect to their ancestors and celebrate their heritage and cultural practices.
Today, the usage of waist beads by Black and Brown women in the West has evolved into a cultural tradition of its very own, one that reflects the diasporic experience.
Many women in the diaspora don’t have direct knowledge of their West African lineage due to the transatlantic slave trade. Reclaiming waist beads also means Black women can reclaim the opportunity to walk in their ancestors’ footsteps. The beads are a constant physical reminder that heritage is never as far away as you may think, and it’s up for personal interpretation.
Posture
Beads around one's waist can help a person become more aware of their stomach and posture. The beads fit quite differently depending on how one is sitting and breathing. They can serve as a reminder to sit up straight, engage your stomach muscles, relax your back, and breathe properly.
How do you choose the right waist beads for your body?
The best thing about waist beads is how individual they are. You can wear as many strands of beads as you like, and you can wear them for whatever reason you want. They’re a powerful means of self-expression.
To measure yourself for waist beads, waist bead artist Anita from The Bee Stop first recommends deciding where you want your beads to sit on your body. Do you want them high on your waist? Down at your hips? Right at your belly button?
After you decide, wrap measuring tape or string around that part of your body to get the measurement. If you’re using a string, mark on the string where the two ends meet, then measure that length with a ruler. Try not to wrap the string or tape too snugly around your body. It will result in a tighter fit than you may anticipate.
Some waist beads are permanent. That means the string doesn’t stretch, and there’s no clasp to take the beads on or off. They’re designed to stay on your body 24/7 until they break or you decide to cut them off for good.
Some removable waist beads are also adjustable or come with extender chains. These may be a good option for people who want to continue wearing the same waist beads at any size without worrying about “fitting” into them. Instead, the beads fit you.
What are the meanings of the colors and stones?
There are a lot of styles, colors, and materials to choose from. Beads around one's waist can be rich with symbolism if you so choose. Each color and stone is associated with a specific meaning:
Color meanings
- Blue: healing, harmony, insight, truth
- Brown: earth, stability
- Green: prosperity, fertility, abundance, hope, healing
- Purple: spirituality, wisdom, royalty
- Red: vitality, passion, bravery, confidence
- White: light, truth, purity
- Yellow: wisdom, clarity, awareness, energy, joy
- Stone and charm meanings
- Evil eye: protection against negativity
- Green aventurine: luck, prosperity, wealth
- Hamsa: protection against evil or bad luck
- Lapis lazuli: peace, wisdom, truth, insight
- Quartz: clarity, amplifies other crystals
- Rose quartz: love, compassion, healing
Where to buy waist beads?
If possible, try to buy your first pair of waist beads in person. That way, the artist can measure them to your body and make sure the beads fit exactly how you want them to fit.
If there’s an African market near you, there may be a waist bead artist there. If not, a vendor can likely point you in the right direction.
If you can’t find a waist bead artist in your area or if you’re more comfortable ordering online, there are a ton of options available.
Some, like The Bee Stop or Bruja de LaCocina, sell through Etsy. Others maintain their own online storefronts, such as Alaiyo WaistBeads and Waists By Wednesday.
Keep in mind that if you can’t find premade waist beads in your size, many artists are happy to take a custom order.

The Basic Education Certificate Examination; an overview! |
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) serves as the primary examination for determining students' eligibility for admission into secondary and vocational schools in both Ghana and Nigeria. This document has been composed following the completion of a three-year junior secondary education programme.
The administration of this programme is overseen by the Ghana Education Service, which operates under the purview of the Ministry of Education. In Nigeria, the administration of education is overseen by the state ministry of education in each state, with the National Examinations Council (NECO) providing supervision.
The National Examinations Council (NECO) is responsible for the administration of examinations in Unity Schools, Armed Forces Secondary Schools, and other Federal Government schools. Candidates who have been approved by the Ghana Education Service and are currently in their third year of junior high school are eligible to take the examination. Registration
Schools that have received approval from the Ghana Education Service or the National Examinations Council (NECO) are eligible to facilitate student registration for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on an annual basis. The entry period spans six weeks, commencing in October and concluding in November. The schools that are participating in the programme are required to upload their Statement of Entries and School Choice Files through the online platform for further processing. The Continuous Assessment Scores are submitted to the council in the form of compact discs.
Candidate grading and selection
The examination comprises a combination of multiple-choice and written questions, along with Continuous (Internal) Assessment marks assigned by the schools. In Ghana, candidates are assessed using a nine-point grading scale, where Grade 1 represents the highest level of performance and Grade 9 indicates the lowest level of performance. Since 2017, candidates in Nigeria have been evaluated using a non-linear 5-point scale.
- A(Distinction) The highest grade
- B (Upper Credit)
- C (Lower Credit)
- P (Pass)
- F (Fail) The lowest grade.
Before 2017, it was graded on a non-linear 4-point scale:
- A(Distinction) The highest grade
- C(Credit)
- P(Pass)
- F(Fail) The lowest grade
The Ghana Education Service employs its computerised School Selection and Placement System to allocate eligible candidates who have successfully completed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to senior high schools, technical institutes, and vocational institutions. In Nigeria, the allocation of students to specific study tracks such as Science, Arts, Commercial, or vocational is determined by individual schools, taking into consideration the students' BECE results.
Review of scripts
The scripts, which refer to graded tests, are retained for a duration of three months before being disposed of. During this period, individuals may undergo an examination, subject to a fee, upon the approval of the school's principal or an accredited representative.
Certification
Certificates for successful candidates will be generated within one month following the release of results. These certificates will be sent to schools for the purpose of collection by individual candidates. We regret to inform you that certificates that have been lost or damaged after collection cannot be replaced.

Why do guys stare at me but never smile? 5 possible reasons! [Image Credit: Pixabay] |
Why is that dude boring a hole through you with his eyes but never cracking a smile?
It’s a bit disconcerting, to say the least.
Have you ever felt the weight of a guy’s stare like this, yet he remains poker-faced and unsmiling?
It’s a puzzling situation that leaves you scratching your head, curious about the thoughts behind those enigmatic stares.
Fret not because we’re about to explore the intriguing world of unsmiling male gazes and uncover the reasons behind this perplexing phenomenon.
Why Do Guys Stare at Me but Never Smile? 5 Possible Reasons!
What does it mean when a guy gapes at you as though he’s trying to read your mind? Is there spinach in your teeth?
Is he looking at the clock behind you?
It’s time to dive deep into the minds of these silent onlookers and unveil 5 potential answers to the query, ‘why do guys stare at me but never smile?’
1. They are just lost in thought
Guys may sometimes look at you blankly while they're preoccupied with their own ideas. They may not even be aware that they are gazing at you since their thoughts might be focused on an issue, an idea, or plans for later in the day.
It's only that their attention is diverted; it has nothing to do with you. Therefore, keep in mind that if you see someone looking at you without smiling, it's possible that they are thinking about something entirely unrelated to you!
Remember that it's normal to sometimes lose our minds, and it doesn't mean anything personal.
2. Shyness Takes Over
It's true that some males are just shy and find it difficult to communicate their emotions honestly. When they are interested in someone, they could find it difficult to smile or look them in the eye.
They may be attempting to connect with you with a frigid look, trying not to expose too much of themselves. If you believe this to be the case, attempt to make them feel comfortable by striking up a polite discussion and see if they open up instead of passing judgement too quickly.
3. They’re Trying to Read You
If a man looks at you without smiling, it might be an attempt to gauge your feelings. He could be interested in your hobbies, demeanour, or the way you're handling a certain circumstance.
His gaze is not so much intended to elicit a certain feeling as it is to observe and acquire information.
Try to be more conscious of your body language and facial expressions if you see someone looking at you like this since they might be revealing information about your sentiments and thoughts.
4. It’s a Confidence Tactic
Some men convey confidence and power by staring. They may feel more in control of their emotions and be less likely to come off as unsure or weak if they keep their face serious.
If a male is gazing at you like this, it might be an attempt to project strength or show his dominance in a certain circumstance.
Remember that this is only one of the various ways individuals express themselves; it doesn't always indicate he's hostile or unapproachable.
5. They’re Attracted to You
As strange as it may seem, there are situations where a straight-faced look might be seen as a sign of interest. A guy might be so taken in by your look or manner that he forgets to grin or is unsure of how to respond.
Instead of indicating indifference, the absence of a grin might mean that he is deeply connected to you and doesn't want to turn away.
Try smiling and maintaining eye contact with him to see if he feels the same way.
As you can see, it may be quite the adventure to interpret an expressionless look! You'll be more prepared to handle these fascinating social situations with poise and confidence if you understand the potential causes and react accordingly.
Thank you for reading this piece on, ‘why do guys stare at me but never smile?’ I believe it has been helpful. Leave your comments, in the comment section below. XOXO.

You’ve probably noticed that some guys just seem to exude confidence.
The problem is that, while it’s obvious that men who convey confidence stand out from the crowd, it’s not always obvious what “conveying confidence” even means.
Just what are the signs of a confident man? And more to the point, what characteristics or traits do you need to develop in order to join his ranks?
1. High Self-Awareness.
Self-awareness is an essential component of confidence and is often considered a hallmark of a highly confident man. Men who are self-aware have a deep understanding of their thoughts, emotions, values, and beliefs, and are able to communicate them effectively.
Self-awareness allows confident men to make informed decisions, set achievable goals, and navigate challenges with ease. They understand their strengths and weaknesses, and are able to leverage their strengths to their advantage. At the same time, they are aware of their limitations and are not afraid to seek help or support when needed.
Self-awareness also helps confident men to build strong relationships with others. They are able to understand and empathize with the perspectives and emotions of others, and are able to communicate in a way that is respectful and assertive.
2. They have a vision
Confidence is a vital ingredient in personal and professional success, and men who possess a clear vision are often highly confident individuals. A vision is a powerful tool that provides direction, motivation, and purpose in life. A confident man understand the importance of having a vision and make it a priority in their lives. Your vision helps you understand why you're doing something and where will it lead you to.
Having a vision allows to set specific, measurable, and achievable goals. It provides a roadmap for future and helps to focus on time, energy, and resources towards desired outcomes. Confident men understand that their vision is not set in stone and that it may evolve over time, but they are committed to pursuing it with purpose and determination.
You use your vision as a source of motivation and inspiration. When faced with challenges, you are able to draw strength from your vision and remain focused on your long-term goals. This helps to overcome obstacles and maintain momentum towards your desired outcomes.
3. They are resilient; they are not afraid to fail
Confidence and resilience are closely intertwined, and men who are confident often possess a strong sense of resilience. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity and handle challenges with grace and determination. A confident man understands that, failure is a natural part of the growth and learning process, and are not afraid to take calculated risks and pursue their goals, even if it means facing the possibility of failure.
Confident men view failures as opportunities to learn and grow, and they use their experiences to improve themselves. They are able to accept their mistakes, learn from them, and move forward with greater wisdom and insight. This helps them to develop a growth mindset, which is a key component of resilience and success.
In addition, confident men have a positive outlook on life and focus on the good in every situation. This helps them to maintain a sense of hope and optimism, even in the face of challenges and setbacks. They understand that success is not a linear process, and that there will be ups and downs along the way.
Confident men are also able to manage their emotions effectively, and are able to regulate their emotional responses in a healthy manner. This helps them to remain calm and level-headed in challenging situations, and to avoid impulsive or irrational behavior.
4. They are positive
Confidence and a positive outlook on life are closely related, and men who are confident often possess a positive and optimistic mindset. A confident man understands that, life is a journey, filled with ups and downs, and they choose to focus on the good in every situation.
Having a positive outlook on life allows you to maintain a sense of hope and optimism, even in the face of challenges and setbacks. A confident man understand that success is not a linear process, and that there will be obstacles along the way. Instead of becoming discouraged or defeated, one should view these challenges as opportunities to grow and learn.
Confident men also choose to surround themselves with positive and supportive individuals. They understand the importance of having a strong support system, and make an effort to surround themselves with people who bring out the best in them. This helps to create a positive and uplifting environment, and allows confident men to maintain a positive outlook on life.
In addition, confident men practice gratitude and focus on the blessings in their lives. They appreciate the small things, and are thankful for the opportunities and challenges that come their way. This helps them to maintain a positive and optimistic mindset, and to appreciate the journey, regardless of the outcome.
5. They make self-care a priority
Confidence and self-care are closely linked, and confident men understand the importance of taking care of their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. They prioritize their health and make self-care a priority in their lives.
A confident man understand that a healthy body is the foundation of a healthy mind and spirit. They make physical fitness a priority and engage in regular exercise and physical activity. They also pay attention to their nutrition and make healthy food choices to support their physical health.

Confident men also make time for themselves and engage in activities that bring them joy and fulfillment. They understand that self-care is not selfish, but rather a necessary part of maintaining their physical, mental, and emotional health. They set boundaries, prioritize their time, and make sure to engage in activities that bring them happiness and balance.
6. They are effective communicators
A confident man understands the importance of effective communication, and they make a conscious effort to hone their communication skills. Effective communication is an essential component of confidence, and confident men use their communication skills to build strong relationships, influence others, and achieve their goals.
Confident men are able to express themselves clearly and effectively. They listen actively, and are able to articulate their thoughts and ideas in a clear and concise manner. They also understand the importance of nonverbal communication, and they use body language, eye contact, and tone of voice to convey their messages effectively.
In addition, confident men are able to handle difficult conversations and conflict with grace and professionalism. They are able to maintain their composure, even in the face of challenging or stressful situations, and they use active listening and empathy to diffuse tense situations and reach mutually agreeable solutions.
Confident men also understand the importance of adapting their communication style to the needs of their audience. They are able to modify their language and communication style to build rapport and establish trust with others.
7. They take action
A confident man understand that indecision and inaction can hold them back from achieving their goals and leading fulfilling lives. Confident men are not afraid to make decisions and take the necessary actions to achieve their goals.
They have a clear understanding of their values and priorities, and they use this understanding to inform their decision-making. They are able to weigh the pros and cons of different options and make decisions that align with their values and goals. Confident men are not afraid to make tough decisions, even in the face of uncertainty or opposition.
In addition, confident men are able to take action in a timely manner. They do not let fear or procrastination hold them back from taking the necessary steps to achieve their goals. They understand that taking action is the only way to make things happen, and they are not afraid to take the initiative and make things happen.
Confident men also understand that success is not always a straight path, and they are willing to pivot and adjust their plans as necessary. They are flexible and adaptable, and they are not afraid to change course if they encounter obstacles or roadblocks.
It is important to note that too much confidence can sometimes become a hindrance. Over-confidence can lead to taking unnecessary risks and making poor decisions. It is crucial to strike a balance between having confidence in oneself and remaining humble and aware of one's limitations.
In conclusion, confidence is a complex and multi-faceted concept that is essential to our well-being, personal growth and success. By nurturing and developing our confidence, we can take control of our lives, overcome our fears and reach our full potential.

The Global Management Challenge. 10 Oct 2023, 6:40 pm
The Global Management Challenge. |
The Global Management Challenge (GMC) is a prestigious strategic management competition designed for both experienced managers and university students. Participants are required to form teams consisting of 3-5 members. These teams are then assigned to a group, which typically comprises 5-8 teams, depending on the specific competition.
The participating teams are subsequently assigned a virtual company, which is initially indistinguishable from the other companies in the competition. Each team subsequently advances their company by formulating a sequence of decisions pertaining to all facets of the business, encompassing considerations such as the acquisition of machinery and allocation of advertising expenditures. During each round, a total of five sets of decisions are made, which correspond to five quarters. A quarter is a time interval commonly recognised as encompassing three months.
The decisions, documented on the Decision Sheet, are analysed using advanced business simulation software. This software generates comprehensive Management Reports that provide detailed insights into the outcomes of these decisions. The objective is to achieve the highest share price on the virtual stock exchange by the end of the game.
The competition is structured into multiple rounds, typically consisting of 3 or 4 rounds at the national level and 2 rounds at the international level. The quantity of national rounds may vary in each country and is contingent upon the number of participants. Certain countries employ a slightly varied approach by integrating the Global Management Challenge with other competitions.
In India, teams participate in an additional competition that is more sector-specific, such as simulating the operations of a car manufacturing company. The top 8 teams from this competition advance to the GMC national final. In Germany, the participants exclusively engage in the Global Management Challenge (GMC) during their final round. While it may appear intriguing, this situation poses a disadvantage for those teams, as they lack familiarity with the simulation in comparison to other teams at the international level.
History
The competition originated in 1980 in Portugal through a collaboration between SDG – Simuladores e Modelos de Gestão – and Expresso, a renowned weekly newspaper. The GMC computer model was developed by Edit 515 Limited, a registered company based in Scotland, United Kingdom. The content is regularly updated to accurately reflect current trading conditions and business risks. The objective is to provide competitors with highly realistic and intricate business scenarios, encompassing diverse challenges and issues.
The Global Management Challenge has established itself as the largest strategic management competition worldwide, attracting an impressive annual participation of 20,000 individuals. Over the course of four decades, a substantial number of over 400,000 university students and company managers from various countries across the globe have actively engaged in participation since the year 1980.
The contest currently attracts participation from over 30 countries, including Angola, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong SAR (China), Hungary, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Macau SAR (China), Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, People's Republic of China, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and Venezuela.
In the upcoming 2010-2011 session, the contest welcomed two new African countries: Ivory Coast and Benin. Notably, Ivory Coast partnered with Educarriere.net, a renowned website in the region that has gained prominence for its publication of various examination results.
Every nation independently coordinates its own National competition, ensuring that all materials are produced exclusively in the official language of that particular country. The champions of the National competition convene to participate in the International Semi-Finals and, if they emerge victorious, proceed to compete in the International Final (with outcomes still reported in the respective languages of each country).
World Champions – Global Management Challenge
In the inaugural year of the competition in 1980, the participation was limited to teams from Portugal. During the subsequent two-year period, the winner of the GMC was determined through a final match between Portugal and Brazil, showcasing the Luso-Brazilian rivalry. In 1981, Brazil emerged as the victor, while Portugal claimed the title in 1982. Since 1983, the victor has been determined through an International Final, which is graciously hosted by one of the participating nations. Biltong: A dried, cured meat from Southern Africa. |
Biltong is a type of dehydrated and preserved meat that has its origins in various Southern African nations, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, and Zambia. A diverse range of meats, including beef and game meats like ostrich or kudu, are utilised in its production. The cut may also vary, with options including fillets of meat cut into strips following the grain of the muscle, or flat pieces sliced across the grain. The topic at hand pertains to beef jerky, which shares similarities with spiced, dried meats. However, it is important to note that there may be variations in terms of typical ingredients, taste, and production processes.
The term "biltong" originates from the Dutch words "bil" meaning "buttock" and "tong" meaning "strip" or "tongue".
Origin
The preservation of meat as a survival technique has been practised since ancient times.
Meat preservation can be achieved through various methods, including the use of salt, brine, vinegar, and saltpetre (potassium nitrate). Potassium nitrate is effective in eliminating Clostridium botulinum, a highly dangerous bacterium responsible for causing botulism. Additionally, the acidic nature of vinegar acts as a growth inhibitor for this bacterium. Based on information provided by the World Health Organisation, it has been determined that the growth of C. botulinum is inhibited in acidic conditions with a pH level below 4.6. Consequently, the formation of the toxin in acidic foods is prevented.
The utilisation of specific spices for their antimicrobial properties has been documented since ancient times. The Dutch have incorporated various spices into biltong, such as pepper, coriander, and cloves.
In January 2017, a research team from the University of Beira Interior in Portugal conducted a study on the antimicrobial properties of coriander oil. Coriander, a prominent spice used in basic biltong recipes, was tested against 12 bacterial strains. The findings revealed that a concentration of coriander oil as low as 1.6% effectively eradicated 10 out of the 12 bacterial strains. The growth of Bacillus cereus and Enterococcus faecalis, the two strains that were not effectively eradicated, was significantly reduced by the application of coriander oil.
There was a pressing need for food preservation in Southern Africa. At that time, the concept of iceboxes and refrigerators had not yet been developed, resulting in the absence of efficient means for food preservation. Additionally, the process of establishing and expanding livestock herds was a time-consuming endeavour. Given the abundance of game in Southern Africa, traditional preservation methods were employed to conserve the meat of large African animals, such as the eland.
The meat underwent a preparation process involving vinegar and spices, after which it was suspended for a period of two weeks to undergo air drying. This was carried out during the winter season, taking advantage of the colder temperatures to effectively impede the growth of bacteria and fungi. After undergoing proper drying, the biltong was prepared for packaging in cloth bags, which facilitated air circulation to mitigate the risk of mould formation.
Ingredients
The most common ingredients of biltong are.
- Meat
- Black pepper
- Coriander
- Salt
- Vinegar
Modern-day ingredients sometimes added include balsamic vinegar or malt vinegar, sugar, dry ground chilli peppers, nutmeg, paprika, lemon juice, garlic, bicarbonate of soda, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and saltpetre.
Meat
In Southern Africa, prior to the advent of refrigeration, the preservation of various types of meat was achieved through the curing process. However, in contemporary times, biltong is predominantly crafted from beef due to its abundant availability and comparatively lower cost compared to game meats. The highest quality cuts of meat, including fillet, sirloin, and steaks derived from the hip region such as topside or silverside, are utilised. Alternative cuts may be utilised; however, their quality may not be as superior.
Biltong can also be made from:
- Chicken, simply referred to as chicken biltong.
- Fish in this case, known as bokkoms (shark biltong can also be found in South Africa). Bokkoms should not be confused with other cured fish such as dried angelfish and dried snoek.
- Game such as kudu, springbok, and wildebeest
- Ostrich meat (bright red, often resembling game)
- Venison meat (used in Europe resembling game)
Preparation
Historically, biltong production was limited to the winter season, as it presented lower risks of bacterial growth and mould formation. Certain recipes may call for marinating the meat in a vinegar solution, traditionally using grape vinegar, although balsamic and cider vinegar can also be suitable alternatives. This marination process typically lasts for a few hours, after which the vinegar is drained before proceeding to season the meat with salt and spices. The spice mix is generously sprinkled over the meat and thoroughly rubbed in. The addition of saltpetre is discretionary and serves as an additional preservative. It is primarily recommended for wet biltong that will not undergo freezing. The meat should be allowed to rest for a few additional hours (or refrigerated overnight) and any excess liquid should be drained before hanging the meat in the dryer.
In some traditional recipes, biltong is typically marinated in a mixture of vinegar, salt, and spices for a period of 12 to 24 hours, as per the instructions passed down through generations. The traditional spice mix typically comprises equal proportions of rock salt, whole coriander (lightly toasted), coarsely ground black pepper, and brown sugar. According to the World Health Organisation, vinegar acts as a primary inhibitor of Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Additionally, the salt, coriander, pepper, and cloves possess antimicrobial properties.
Drying
Historically, biltong production was commonly practised during the chilly winters of the South African highveld region in order to achieve optimal outcomes. The cold and dry air consistently facilitates optimal drying of the biltong, ensuring the highest level of food safety. The presence of mould and bacterial hazards is naturally minimised, allowing for the option of hanging thicker biltong cuts to undergo a slow drying process. This results in a more enhanced texture, a more pronounced flavour, and a darker appearance.
The incorporation of heat into the biltong-making process has been a relatively recent development, according to traditional biltong makers, who argue that the utilisation of heat leads to a substandard final product. The utilisation of heated methods, such as those employed in cardboard or wooden biltong boxes (urban) or climate-controlled dry rooms (commercial), is not feasible without the incorporation of nitrates or nitrites (curing salts) due to the heightened susceptibility to bacterial and fungal proliferation.
The utilisation of different spices can result in the creation of a diverse range of flavours. In colder climates, it is possible to produce biltong by utilising an electric lamp for the drying process. However, it is crucial to exercise caution and ensure proper ventilation to prevent the formation of mould on the meat.
The conventional method of slow drying typically results in a moderate curing process that takes approximately four days. A fan-assisted electric oven, set to a temperature range of 40–70 °C (104–158 °F), can effectively dry the meat within approximately four hours when the oven door is slightly ajar to allow for the release of moist air. While oven-dried biltong can be consumed within a day or two of being prepared, traditional biltong makers maintain that slow-dried meat is both safer and of higher quality.
Comparison to jerky
Biltong differs from jerky in four distinct ways:
- The meat used in biltong is often much thicker due to the slower drying time in dry air conditions; typically, biltong meat is cut in strips around 25 millimetres (0.98 in) wide, but can be thicker. Jerky is normally very thin meat.
- The vinegar, salt, and spices in biltong, together with the drying process, cure the meat as well as adding texture and flavour. Jerky is traditionally dried with salt, but without vinegar.
- Jerky is often smoked; biltong is rarely smoked.
- Biltong normally does not contain any sugar additives, while jerky most of the time does.
Retail
Biltong is a widely available product found in Southern African butcher shops and grocery stores. It is typically sold in the form of wide strips, also referred to as "stokkies," which translates to "little sticks." Additionally, the product is available for purchase in plastic bags, occasionally shrink-wrapped, and is offered in either finely shredded or sliced form, resembling biltong chips.
Additionally, there are specialised retailers that offer biltong for sale. These establishments offer biltong in varying degrees of moisture, categorised as "wet," "medium," or "dry." Furthermore, certain customers have a preference for a higher fat content, whereas others prefer a leaner option.
Eating
Biltong is commonly consumed as a snack; however, it can also be utilised by dicing it into stews or incorporating it into muffins or pot bread. Biltong-flavored potato crisps have been developed, alongside certain cheese spreads that offer a biltong-infused taste. Finely shredded biltong is commonly consumed as a topping on bread slices and is also used as an ingredient in sandwiches.
Biltong has the potential to serve as a teething aid for infants.
Biltong is a food product that is known for its high protein content. Typically, a ratio of 200 g of beef is utilised to produce 100 g of biltong, with the biltong-making process effectively retaining a significant portion of the protein content. Certain types of biltong may contain protein content of up to 67%.
Worldwide
The popularity of biltong has extended to several countries that have significant South African communities, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the United States, and India. Biltong is also manufactured within South African expatriate communities worldwide, including countries such as Germany, Ireland, and South Korea.
According to the regulations set by HM Customs and Excise and its successor HM Revenue and Customs, the importation of meat-based products from non-EU countries, including South Africa, is prohibited in Britain. As a result, biltong is produced within the UK.
Biltong is not as commonly found in the United States compared to beef jerky, which has traditionally enjoyed greater popularity as a dried meat snack. In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the presence of biltong in the United States, primarily due to the influence of South African immigrants who have introduced their native culture and culinary traditions to the country. The United States Department of Agriculture mandates that imports of biltong from South Africa must be accompanied by a meat inspection certificate issued by a recognised South African government authority. This requirement is in place due to concerns regarding the presence of foot-and-mouth disease in South Africa.

A Pizzeria? Here's what you need to know! |
A pizzeria is an establishment that specialises in serving pizza. In addition to pizza, pizzerias offer a variety of dishes such as kebab, salads, and pasta. Numerous pizzerias provide take-away services, allowing customers to place their food orders either in advance or directly at the establishment.
The prepared food is then conveniently packaged in pizza boxes, enabling customers to enjoy their meals at a different location. Certain pizzerias offer the convenience of home delivery, wherein a designated courier transports the ordered food to the customer's residence or an agreed-upon location. This service is available within a reasonable proximity to the pizzeria's location. Pizzas can be transported via automobile, although it is worth noting that in numerous countries, pizza couriers opt for bicycle or moped delivery methods. The food can be conveniently ordered at the restaurant, via telephone, and in modern times, frequently through online platforms as well.
In Italy, pizza has historically been regarded as a staple among individuals of modest means, and as such, it typically featured a limited selection of economical ingredients. The popularity of pizza in the United States grew significantly following World War II, transforming it into a predominantly convenient and expeditious dish rather than a staple for individuals with limited financial means.
The cost of pizza was not particularly high; however, the inclusion of a greater variety of ingredients led to a departure from the use of inexpensive components in its preparation. The accessibility of pizza significantly increased with the advent of frozen pizzas and the introduction of pizza delivery services. Prominent pizzeria chains in the industry encompass Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Domino's Pizza, Pizza Express, Kotipizza, and Rosso.
History
Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba in Naples, Italy is widely regarded as one of the oldest pizzerias in existence that continues to operate to this day. The establishment originated in 1738 as a catering establishment serving merchants, and underwent a transformation into a fully-fledged restaurant with seating arrangements and an additional upper floor in 1830.
Raffaele Esposito established one of the earliest pizzerias globally in Naples during the year 1830. The restaurant, which remains in operation presently, is currently known as Pizzeria Brandi. The inaugural pizza margherita was prepared in 1889, featuring the vibrant hues of the Italian flag, as a tribute to Queen Margherita of Savoy during her visit to the establishment.
Pizza sales in the United States commenced in 1905, with the introduction of a pizza oven by Gennaro Lombardi in his shop-café, where he began offering individual slices of pizza for purchase.
The initial establishment of a pizzeria in Finland occurred with the establishment of Restaurant Giovanni in Hamina in 1961 by Giovanni Tedeschi. This establishment remained operational until the early 1980s. The subsequent establishment in Finland's pizzeria scene was the Adriano Bar restaurant, established by Adriano Vinciguerra in Lappeenranta in 1964.
Fast food
During the latter half of the 20th century, the emergence of fast food had a significant impact on the pizza industry, leading to notable changes in pizza sales. In Italy, there has been a rise in the presence of food stands that specialise in offering pizza al taglio, which translates to "pizza by the slice" in English. These stands bake sizable rectangular pizzas that are then sold in smaller individual slices. These slices are typically garnished with a maximum of two additional ingredients, excluding tomato and cheese.
Pizzerias owned by immigrants
In several European countries, including Sweden, a considerable number of pizzeria owners and employees have an immigrant background. The prevalence of immigrants employed in the restaurant industry extends beyond Sweden and is observed in numerous OECD countries.
In Sweden, a significant number of pizzerias are owned by immigrants and function as independent small-scale enterprises. The inception of this business model coincided with the introduction of pizza to Sweden in the 1970s.
Sociologist Henrik Hultman has conducted research that highlights several factors contributing to the employment of immigrants from non-European countries within the pizzeria industry. In comparison to other enterprises, initiating a small-scale pizzeria is a cost-effective venture that does not necessitate specialised training. Individuals who possess limited education and work experience due to circumstances such as war or challenging immigration processes may consider the pizzeria industry as a viable alternative. However, even individuals with higher levels of education may encounter lengthy study requirements in order to practise their previous professions in Sweden. Running a pizzeria can provide a practical means of financial support for oneself and one's family, especially when compared to the extensive investments required for pursuing higher education.
A significant number of pizzeria proprietors originate from a social milieu that places great importance on entrepreneurship. It is not uncommon for their parents to have owned or been employed in small-scale family enterprises, such as farming or craftsmanship. Linguistic challenges can also impact and influence the restaurant industry, and establishing connections through acquaintances or fellow nationals can facilitate a smooth entry into the business. Positions that do not necessitate specialised training are relatively scarce, resulting in limited alternative options.

All you need to know about the Ragdoll Cat. |
The Ragdoll is a cat breed characterised by its unique colour point coat and striking blue eyes. The morphology of the subject is characterised by its substantial size and weight, accompanied by a semi-long and luxuriously soft coat. The Ragdoll breed was developed by American breeder Ann Baker during the 1960s. The breed is widely recognised for its gentle and calm demeanour, as well as its loving disposition. The term 'Ragdoll' is derived from the characteristic behaviour observed in individuals from the original breeding stock, wherein they exhibit a tendency to become limp and relaxed when lifted. This breed is highly favoured in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
Ragdolls are frequently referred to as "canine-like felines" or "resembling puppies" due to their inclination to accompany individuals, their ease of handling, and their comparatively low levels of aggression towards other animals.
Ragdolls can be identified by the distinctive upside-down V-shaped markings on their foreheads, which are exclusive to the bicolor variant. They are also characterised by their large, round blue eyes, soft and thick coats, robust limbs, long tails, and supple bodies. The colour rings they offer are typically tricolour or bicolor in nature.
History of the Ragdoll Cat
The breed was developed in Riverside, California, by breeder Ann Baker. A standard, non-pedigreed, white domestic longhaired feline named Josephine has successfully birthed multiple litters of average cats. Josephine did not belong to a specific breed, and the males who fathered the initial litters were also not of any particular breed. According to Ann Baker, the original cats of the Ragdoll breed were referred to as "alley cats". Josephine subsequently bred kittens that exhibited a docile and placid temperament, along with an affectionate disposition. Additionally, these kittens displayed a tendency to become limp and relaxed when handled.
From those initial litters, two notable kittens emerged: Blackie, a male with a solid black coat, and Daddy Warbucks, a seal point feline with white paws. The founding bi-color female Fugianna was sired by Daddy Warbucks, while Buckwheat, a dark brown/black Burmese-like female, was sired by Blackie. Both Fugianna and Buckwheat were offspring of Josephine. All Ragdolls trace their lineage back to Baker's cats, specifically through the breeding of Daddy Warbucks with Fugianna and Buckwheat.
Baker, in a rather unconventional decision, chose not to align with traditional cat breeding associations. The individual successfully obtained a trademark for the name "Ragdoll" and subsequently established the International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA) in approximately 1971. They implemented rigorous criteria for individuals interested in breeding or selling cats under the aforementioned name. The Ragdolls were also prohibited from being registered by other breed associations. The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) continues to be in existence presently, albeit with a relatively diminished presence, especially following the passing of Baker in 1997.
In 1975, a group, led by Denny and Laura Dayton, decided to separate from the IRCA in order to establish wider acceptance and recognition for the Ragdoll breed. The development of the Ragdoll standard, which is currently recognised by major cat registries like the CFA and the FIFe, can be traced back to the initial breeding pair of IRCA cats. During the early 1960s, a pair of Ragdolls was exported to the United Kingdom, coinciding with the period when the Ragdoll breed was gaining popularity in America. An additional eight felines accompanied this duo, thus solidifying the establishment of the breed within the United Kingdom. It is worth noting that the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy officially acknowledges this breed.
Breed Description (Ragdoll Cat)
Temperament
The Ragdoll Cat is renowned for its gentle and tranquil disposition, believed to have been inherited from the Persian and Birman breeds. There are differing opinions regarding whether this characteristic could be attributed to genetic mutation or simply an instinctive response acquired from being nurtured by their mother as kittens. The high level of docility exhibited by certain individuals has contributed to the misconception that Ragdolls possess a resistance to pain. Certain breeders in Britain have made efforts to selectively breed cats in order to reduce the prevalence of limpness, as they have expressed concerns about the potential drawbacks associated with extreme docility, which may not align with the cat's overall well-being.
The marketing and publicity material for the Ragdoll breed portrays it as an affectionate, intelligent, and gentle cat with a relaxed temperament. It is often described as an easy-to-handle lap cat. These animals are commonly referred to as "puppy cats," "dog-like cats," or "cat-dogs" due to their calm demeanour and affectionate behaviour. They often exhibit traits such as following their owners from room to room and seeking physical affection, similar to certain dog breeds.
Ragdolls have the ability to be trained in toy retrieval and derive pleasure from engaging in this activity. They exhibit a lively and spirited demeanour that often persists throughout their later years. In contrast to numerous other breeds, Ragdolls exhibit a preference for remaining closer to ground level rather than seeking out the highest point within the household.
Physical Characteristics of the Ragdoll Cat
The Ragdoll breed is recognised for its substantial size among domesticated cats. Adult females typically have a weight range of 8 to 15 pounds (3.6 to 6.8 kg). Male individuals exhibit a notable increase in size, typically ranging from 12 to 20 pounds (5.4 to 9.1 kg) or even exceeding these measurements. The Ragdoll breed typically requires a period of approximately four years to reach its full mature size. The individual possesses a robust physique, substantial build, and well-proportioned lower extremities. The individuals possess cranial structures that are characterised by a broad shape, featuring a flat upper surface and a significant distance between the ears. These animals possess elongated, well-developed physiques characterised by broad chests and compact necks.
The tails of these animals are characterised by their bushy and elongated appearance. Their paws are notable for their large size, rounded shape, and tufted features. Additionally, their coats exhibit a silky texture, dense composition, and range from medium to long in length. As a result of their long coats, it is typically recommended to brush them at least twice a week. Adult individuals exhibit the growth of knickerbockers on their posterior limbs, as well as the development of a ruff encircling their neck region.
The breed is commonly recognised for its notable characteristic of large, round, deep blue eyes, although it is worth noting that other cats may also possess this feature. The genetic factors governing point coloration also play a role in the development of these unique blue eyes. In cat shows, there is a preference for more vibrant shades of blue.
The breed's coat primarily comprises of long guard hairs, with a minimal undercoat, resulting in reduced shedding and matting, as stated by the Cat Fanciers' Association. However, it is possible to observe a noticeable increase in shedding during the spring season.
Ragdolls are available in six distinct colours, namely seal, chocolate, red, as well as their corresponding dilutes: blue, lilac, and cream. Additionally, there are variations of lynx and tortoiseshell in all colours, as well as three different patterns. Ragdoll kittens are initially born with a white coat. However, their coloration begins to develop and become more pronounced at around 8-10 weeks of age. It takes approximately 3-4 years for Ragdolls to fully acquire their mature coloration and coat.
Health of the Ragdoll Cat
A study conducted using Swedish insurance data revealed that among the commonly recognised cat breeds, the Ragdoll and Siamese breeds exhibited the lowest rates of survival. The average lifespan of this species typically ranges from 12 to 15 years.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a prevalent cardiac condition observed in felines, primarily attributed to genetic factors. The condition results in myocardial hypertrophy, leading to impaired cardiac function and reduced efficiency in blood circulation. In certain cases, it has the potential to result in abrupt fatality. In Ragdolls that possess a homozygous positive status for the disease (carrying two copies of the HCM gene), the condition may manifest at an early age (as early as six months) and tends to exhibit a severe nature, often resulting in mortality by the age of three for most cats. Cats that are heterozygous, meaning they possess only one copy of the HCM gene, typically exhibit a delayed onset and slower progression of the disease, resulting in a less severe impact.
In 2007, a DNA test was developed to ascertain the specific gene responsible for causing Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Ragdoll cats. To ensure that Ragdolls do not develop the form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) associated with this gene, it is recommended to exclusively breed from Ragdolls that are homozygous negative for this gene.
The allelic frequencies of the Ragdoll HCM mutation R820W were observed to be 0.17 in cats from Italy and 0.23 in cats from the United States in the year 2013. According to this reference, the prevalence of R820W in the United Kingdom is reported to be 30%. The study revealed a prevalence of 2.9% (95% CI = 2.7–8.6%) for HCM.

All you need to know about a Rage Room. |
A rage room, alternatively referred to as a smash room or anger room, is a designated space where individuals have the opportunity to release their pent-up anger and frustration by engaging in the destruction of various objects. Companies provide the opportunity to utilise these rooms through a rental arrangement.
According to statistical data, the majority of customers are female. The utilisation of this approach may not yield desired outcomes or align with the appropriate strategies for individuals experiencing challenges with anger management.
Rage rooms often feature replicas of living rooms and kitchens, complete with various furnishings and items, including televisions and desks. Clients are permitted to bring their personal belongings for the purpose of destruction.
History
It is highly probable that the inception of the first rage rooms occurred in Japan around 2008 or potentially even earlier. The concept has been adopted by several other countries, including Serbia, the United Kingdom, and Argentina. As of 2018, numerous rage rooms were in operation within various cities across the United States.
Donna Alexander, operating autonomously, established an initial rage room within her Dallas-based garage in 2008, utilising discarded items found on public streets. In 2011, she established the Anger Room, a 1,000-square-foot warehouse located in Dallas. Alexander mentioned that she established the facility with the aim of addressing violence by providing individuals with a secure environment to channel their aggressions.
In February 2021, Italian artist Colline di tristezza suggested the implementation of rage rooms and crying rooms within hospitals, nursing homes, and schools as a means to mitigate the potential for staff burnout.
Effectiveness
According to a study conducted in 2017, it was found that rage rooms are not efficacious in effectively managing anger. In fact, in certain instances, participants may experience heightened levels of anger as a result. According to a psychologist interviewed by a news organisation, therapy is highly advantageous in various aspects. However, the act of destroying objects is considered a temporary measure with limited effectiveness, serving as a mere stopgap solution. In general, rage rooms are more effective in providing stress relief rather than addressing genuine anger or rage. A portion of the stress-reducing impact could potentially be attributed to the physical activity engaged in.
Safety
Rage rooms offer a controlled environment for individuals to engage in the destruction of objects. However, it is important to acknowledge the potential hazards associated with this activity, such as the possibility of slipping and falling, the risk of flying debris resulting from the smashing of items, and the potential for emotional distress. As a precautionary measure, establishments mandate the utilisation of safety gear, including eye protection, coveralls, and gloves, for all participants. Additionally, participants are required to sign a liability waiver.
Participants and workers involved in the destruction of various objects may face potential exposure to toxic chemicals. This exposure can occur due to the presence of airborne particles and contact during the cleanup process. Examples of such chemicals include mercury found in old electronics and lead present in leaded glass. Items that are considered high-risk include fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, and CRT screens commonly found in older televisions.
In order to mitigate the potential for legal actions and adhere to insurance regulations, it is typically necessary for participants to be a minimum of 18 years old when utilising the facility independently. However, if accompanied by an adult, participants may be permitted as young as 13 years old. It is important to note that certain individuals, such as pregnant women, intoxicated individuals, and those who are injured or ill, are generally not permitted to participate.
